Miniature soldiers, originally made as toys, were enormously popular with children for hundreds of years. History was disseminated by stories that were re-lived and brought to life through art and games. Charles Brown has collected 8,000 Mignot miniature hand painted military figures over 65 years.
From ancient Egypt through World War I, as the world expanded and methods of warfare changed, the military had to respond. As part of this evolution, the organization of troops, a formalized chain of command, military standards and an honor code demonstrated the evolution of society. More effective munitions, transportation, uniforms, support services to feed, house and care for soldiers on the march were developed.
Playing with soldiers—recreating great battles—combined entertainment, history, and understanding of strategy for generations of children. During the high periods of toy soldiers, such as the Napoleonic Wars, children were experiencing the same feelings for their own military leaders that children today feel when supporting their sports teams and star players.
For children and adults, the Military Trust is a trip back in time that demonstrates a changing world.
