In a thirty-five year career as a photographer, Sam Abell has traveled throughout the world documenting the lives and environments of peoples of all cultures. This comprehensive exhibition of his work shows the development of an artistic sensibility and maturity. A longtime Albemarle County resident, Abell has made in-depth photographic essays for magazines and books and is particularly known for his work for the National Geographic Society, including his 1999 book on Australia. In 1990 Abell’s photographs were exhibited in a one-man show at the International Center of Photography in New York City in conjunction with the publication of his mid-career retrospective Stay This Moment.
The monograph Sam Abell: The Photographic Life, sponsored by The Oakwood Arts and Sciences Foundation, was published by Rizzoli Books to coincide with the exhibition's opening at the University of Virginia Art Museum. The exhibition is organized by the Museum, Sam Abell and guest curator Leah Bendavid-Val.
Playing with soldiers—recreating great battles—combined entertainment, history, and understanding of strategy for generations of children. During the high periods of toy soldiers, such as the Napoleonic Wars, children were experiencing the same feelings for their own military leaders that children today feel when supporting their sports teams and star players.
