The University of Virginia Department of Drama's liberal arts orientation serves as the foundation of the creative focus and energy of our theatre work. The Department of Drama complex includes the 520-seat Culbreth Theatre with proscenium stage, the flexible 160 to 200-seat Helms Theatre, and the new 300-seat Ruth Caplin Theatre with thrust stage. The building houses high-tech classrooms, rehearsal spaces, scenic and costume shops, and an excellent Fine Arts Library is just a few steps away.
The Department of Drama offers a minor in Dance. In addition to coursework, dance minors are required to participate in 1-2 dance performances within the department.
The Dance Program at U.Va. is interested in creating an overall ‘intelligent dancer’. This term describes a dancer that is fluent in various techniques, improvisation skills, composition, theory, performance experience, and production knowledge. We are committed to providing students interested in dance with a balanced program that offers all of these elements to enable students to become strong technical, expressive, and articulate dancers.
