Verge Ensemble Residency February 23-25, 2011
The residency will include several events:
A public concert featuring graduate student compositions together with outstanding pieces from Verge’s repertoire, which includes some of the most exciting composers working today
A public colloquium focusing on the performance practice of contemporary music, and the opportunities and problems of cross-disciplinary collaboration
The ensemble will work directly with student composers, allowing them to develop skills in writing for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, percussion, and sound designer. Verge will also record graduate student compositions, providing a critical element of the students’ portfolios as they enter the job market (recent placements include Oberlin and Yale)

The new composition, Green Chemistry, by John D'Earth for the Jazz Ensemble and the Free Bridge Quintet premiering February 26 s inspired by the international Green Chemsitry movement, which encourages chemists to explore and address the environmental problems created by the many blessings of modern chemistry. The term "green chemistry" can also be taken as a double-entendre because the piece will explore human interaction, as well, especially as regards the "chemistry" between teachers and their students, where the learning goes both ways.
