| In April of 2004, I traveled to the University of Michigan to present a paper that I had written in Professor Arras' PHIL 359: Research Ethics class. My paper focused on the practice of placebo surgery for Parkinson's Disease research. I wrestled with the ethics of this dangerous, yet necessary research control by doing a thorough literature review as well as interviewing a professor of neurosurgery in the Medical School here at UVa. I entered my paper into the Student Paper Contest of the 7th Annual National Undergraduate Bioethics Conference and was elated to win first place and have the opportunity to present it in front of students from universities around the country. I would highly recommend this sort of experience to other undergraduates. Although presenting before so many people was a bit nerve-wracking, I had a wonderful time at the conference. | |
