The structure outlined below is intended as a basic framework within which students and their faculty advisers might plan an integrated and coherent program of study. The various lists of courses given here (e.g., under A.3, B.1, B.2) are intended merely to suggest the sorts of possible courses that might be taken for credit in the Program; additional or new courses will be added to the list each year at the discretion of the Director and the Advisory Committee. The courses listed below are intended only as examples, not as a comprehensive or exhaustive list. A. Basic Courses 1. Introduction to Bioethics (3 credits) 2. Biology Requirement (3 credits) • Biol 1210 (Human Biology) / OR: • Biology 2010 / OR: 3. Ethical/Political Theory (6 credits) Two courses, one of which must be in ethics – i.e., you can either take two ethics courses, one ethics and one political, but not two in political philosophy/theory. • PHIL 1730 Intro to Moral and Political Philosophy • PHIL 3720 Recent Ethical Theory • PHIL 3720 Contemporary Ethics • PHIL 2770 Political Philosophy • RELC 2447 History of Christian Ethics • PLPT 1010 Intro to Political Theory • PLPT 3020 Modern Political Thought • PLPT 3030 Contemporary Political Thought B. Bioethics Electives (3 courses / 9 credits) drawn from the following two categories: 1. Core courses in Bioethics (preferably at 300-level or higher), such as: • PHIL 3650 Justice & Health Care • PHIL 3500 Animals and Ethics • PHIL 3651 Genes, Nature & Justice • PHIL 3780 Reproductive Ethics • PHIL 3790 Research Ethics • PHIL 5760 Global Justice, Health, and Human Rights • PHS 5050 Public Health Law, Ethics & Policy • BIOE 5110 Foundations of Bioethics • BIOE 8110 Clinical Ethics • RELG 4023 Bioethics Internship Seminar • RELI 5559 Islamic Biomedical Ethics 2. Related Electives -- Students may substitute one closely related but not explicitly bioethical course for one bioethics elective. Courses such as: • ANTH 2280 Medical Anthropology • ANTH 2340 Anthropology of Birth and Death • BIOL 3140 Biology of Aging • ECON 4160 Economics of Health • PLIR 4310 Global Health and Human Rights Some particularly apt 200-level courses may count for credit as a Bioethics Elective . Which courses will so count will be up to the discretion of the student's adviser and the Program Director. Students who wish to count a related elective towards their bioethics minor should make every effort to choose a course that is actually related to their other courses in bioethics. For example, a biology course in Human Genetics would mesh well with a bioethics course in Genes, Nature and Justice, or an HES course on the US health care system would mesh well with a bioethics course on Justice & Health Care. |
