Our goal in the Biology Department is to provide a diversified program that serves students with a breadth of interests and ultimately enables them to pursue careers in many areas of the biological sciences. For example, our department offers a specialization in Environmental and Biological Conservation.

The members of the biology faculty include professors who are nationally and internationally recognized in their fields. This commitment to excellence in research complements and enhances the department's dedication to outstanding teaching and provides the resources to promote creative and original research by our students. Students participating in our Distinguished Majors Program present their research at the annual Katz Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Students who have graduated with degrees in biology have been admitted to the most prestigious graduate schools in the country. The acceptance rate of biology graduates to outstanding medical schools is exceptionally high.

Biology Major Pre-Declaration forms with instructions may be downloaded and printed from here (click here for a Word version; click here for a PDF version). When the pre-declaration form has been completed and returned to our office, you will be assigned a major advisor from among our faculty. Completion of your College Major Declaration form is done in consultation with your new advisor. Areas represented by Biology faculty are listed below.

Students should be aware of the requirements for the Biology majors (B.A., B.S.). Transfer students should first meet with the Director of Undergraduate Studies.

Students should direct any questions to their current faculty advisor or to Rita Webb, Graduate and Undergraduate Program Coordinator (bio-advising@virginia.edu).
