There is no substitute for enthusiasm and curiosity. Read the literature pertinent to your project on your own, ask questions and don't expect to have your experiments laid out for you as they are in lab courses. Strive to become engaged with the research. One option (although not required) for entering the lab with a better understanding of the overall research goals is to write a paper for one or two credits (BIOL 385/386) before beginning bench work.

Be certain that you have adequate blocks of time available in your schedule to work in lab. Your mentor will give you the best idea of what schedule will work best for the type of experimental work you'll be doing. You will be expected to spend at least 10-12 hrs/wk in the lab for 3 units of credit. In some cases, working 2 days for 6 hrs/day is preferable and fits with the nature of the experimental protocols you will use. However, in other cases, working 6 days for 2 hrs/day will fit better with the work at hand.
