GRADUATE SCHOOL OF ARTS & SCIENCES STUDENT COUNCIL (GSASC)
     Alex Garcia, Biology Representative

The Biology Department representative on the Graduate Student Arts & Sciences Council attends all GSASC meetings and brings issues that concern Biology graduate students to the council as well as to inform Biology graduate students of important issues covered at meetings. The Biology repsentative is a source of information regarding funding for clubs, travel stipends, and events that individual departments would like to host. Within GSASC, exist subcommittees focused on research and social events. It is the job of the Research Committee to research issues that impact graduate students (i.e. athletic event admission, gym access, health insurance) and report our finding back the council so that we may use this information to make informed decisions. The Social Committee organizes and oversees various events for both faculty and graduate students from all A & S departments. These events provide an opportunity to meet with professors in a social setting as well as to meet other graduate students outside of your own department. For more information regarding GSASC, please contact the Biology Representative above.

BIOLOGY GRADUATE STUDENT AND POSTDOC ASSOCIATION (GSPA)
     Shaili Shah, Co-President
     Melissa Aikens, Co-President
The graduate student and post-doctoral association (GSPA) is an advocacy group for graduate students and post-docs that are in the biology department. The main purposes of GSPA are 1) to promote intellectual discourse across the various disciplines of the biology department, 2) to choose and invite speakers to give talks to the department, 3) to solicit and discuss administrative issues that affect the life of graduate students and post-docs and 4) to expose graduate students and post-docs to ideas on career development that are not part of the training provided by the biology department.
In order to achieve these goals, GSPA hosts a number of events throughout the academic year. Biweekly lunches are held during which students present and get feedback on their research from other members of the department. GSPA also fosters interactions between students, post-docs, and faculty by organizing a variety of social events including happy hours, the annual welcome picnic, and a fall retreat. One of the highlights of the year is the GSPA invited speaker visits. Each year two speakers that have a general interest across the department are invited by GSPA to give a departmental seminar. These speaker visits offer numerous opportunities to rub elbows with the best and brightest scientists. Past speakers have included Dr. Massimo Pigliucci, Dr. Steven Reppert, Dr. Richard Lenski, and Dr. Michaela Hau. This year, Dr. Mike Strand of the University of Georgia and Dr. Monica Geber of Cornell University are the invited speakers.
