MASTER'S PROGRAM IN BIOLOGY

  OVERVIEW

The Biology Department offers graduate training leading to Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees. Biology students working toward a Master's degree are required to complete graduate-level course work, as well as a thesis. The Master's thesis can be based on laboratory (M.S.) or library (M.A.) research. Applicants

should consult the Research Programs page to see the diverse research programs offered in the Department of Biology. The scientific training provided by the Master's degree can introduce students to areas of basic research in which they might subsequently pursue Ph.D. training; or, as a terminal degree, the M.S./M.A. can supply an essential academic credential to enter nonresearch careers, such as secondary education, law, science policy, conservation, and industry. A carefully planned and conscientiously executed Master's degree program can be completed successfully in approximately 2.5 years.
