NEUROBIOLOGY & BEHAVIOR

The nervous system is the basis of all behavior. The Neurobiology and Behavior faculty in the Department of Biology use behavioral, cellular, and molecular approaches to study the nervous system. These approaches are used to investigate the design of motor control networks, the cellular substrates of circadian rhythms, the

functional organization of neuroendocrine and sensory systems and various aspects of neural development. Some of these faculty use invertebrate or nonmammalian vertebrate models to elucidate how organisms sense their environment or how such animals coordinate motor programs in response to external stimuli. Several Neurobiology and Behavior faculty are also members of the Center for Biological Timing who investigate various aspects of rhythmic biological processes that recur every 24 hours. The role of the 24-hour circadian clock that drives these processes is studied within the context of behavior, physiology, and metabolism.
