STUDENT DEADLINES
9/19/2008, Friday, All Students- Independent Research Outline:
Deadline for ALL 491-498 students outline of the research proposed for the term. The half page report should include goals, significance, approach, and methods to be used for the research project. A hard copy, prepared in consultation with your mentor, is due to Dr. Robert Kretsinger rhk5i@virginia.edu or CHEM 205
12/14/2008, Friday, All Students- Independent Research Paper:
It the policy of the Undergraduate Research program that a paper of about 500-1000 words, exclusive of illustrations, describing the background of the project, the rationale, the relevant methods, the student's contributions, and the general conclusions should be prepared by the student at the end of each term for the mentor of record (the faculty member under with whom you are registered for independent research). Papers for 491 often emphasize background and rationale. Papers for 492-498 may refer to material in earlier papers. A hard copy of the paper must be given to the mentor of record by the last day of finals . STUDENTS WITH NON-BIOLOGY MENTORS: Your instructor of record is Robert Kretsinger. You will need to submit your paper to your non-biology mentor AND to Dr. Kretsinger. Papers may be submitted to Dr. Kretsinger's mailbox located outside of the Biology Office, Gilmer 229, or his office in CHEM-205
12/14/2008, Friday, Students working outside Biology- Mentor Evaluation:
Submit (e-mail or hard copy) a very brief evaluation of your research experience and mentor to Kretsinger. This will help to improve the program for future research students and mentors.

Please send Dr. Kretsinger ( rhk5i@virginia.edu ) your recommended grade (All Independent Research courses are graded, A - F) as well as a brief evaluation of the student's progress and performance.

Award: Varying numbers of awards of varying dollar amounts; maximum $500

Students in the College of Arts and Sciences are invited to submit applications for small research and travel grants. Budget requests are considered to a maximum of $500. At the time of application, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and be in good academic standing. Interested students should submit the downloadable application form, a one-page proposal describing their independent research project or travel request, an itemized budget, one letter of recommendation from the student's faculty sponsor who certifies IRB approval of the project if applicable, and an unofficial transcript.
The 1) small research and travel grant application form, 2) research proposal or travel grant request (double spaced), 3) itemized budget, 4) recommendation letter (with statement of IRB approval if required), and 5) unofficial transcript should be submitted in print, not by email or FAX, to Assistant Dean Shawn Lyons, College of Arts and Sciences, 101 Garrett Hall by 4:30 PM.
Oculus Undergraduate Research Journal
Want to be published? Submit your research to the Oculus, the Undergraduate Research Network's research journal! Any research paper written by a UVa undergraduate is eligible. Entries are typically between 7 and 35 pages in length. You may submit more than one paper. All submissions must be made in MS Word .doc format or OpenOffice.odt format. All supporting media (images, charts, tables, and the like) must be supplied in either .jpg or .tif file format. The deadline for submissions is generally in September. The Harrison Undergraduate Research Awards
Purpose: The University of Virginia's Harrison Undergraduate Research Awards program funds
outstanding undergraduate research projects. Forty awards of up to $3000 each will be granted on a competitive basis to current first, second, and third-year undergraduate students. Applicants must be fulltime undergraduates at UVa and must remain enrolled at the University through the completion of their project.
