BOARD
OF VISITORS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY
AGENDA ITEM:A. Chancellor's Transition
BACKGROUND: The decision by Chancellor Lemons to accept the Presidency at Susquehanna University has resulted in a search for a new chancellor at The University of Virginias College at Wise. Mr. George Culbertson, the Provost at the College, has been appointed Chancellor ad interim to serve during the transition period.
DISCUSSION: During the transition period, it will be necessary to make temporary modifications to the administrative structure. These modifications were developed to minimize disruption and ensure continued high performance of all units at the College. The plan of work for the transition period includes:
- moving forward with Connections, a faculty-led curriculum improvement currently in development;
- completing negotiations with the State Council of Higher Education for the Colleges Report of Institutional Effectiveness and with the Secretary of Education on an Institutional Performance Agreement;
- providing input to General Assembly members on the new higher education funding formula, currently under consideration by the Senate Finance and House Appropriations Committees;
- working with the southwest Virginia delegation to address the Colleges legislative agenda; and
- celebrating our students success at graduation.
Mr. Culbertson will report to the Board of Visitors on the modifications to the administrative structure and the plan of work during the transition period.
ACTION REQUIRED: None
AGENDA ITEM: B. Chancellor Search Process
BACKGROUND: The decision by Chancellor Lemons to accept the Presidency at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania has resulted in a search for a new chancellor at The University of Virginias College at Wise. EMN/Witt/Kiefer is assisting in the search and President Casteen has appointed a Search Committee, comprised of members of The University of Virginias College at Wise Board, administrators, faculty, staff, and students. Ms. Joan Fry, Special Assistant to the President, is the Universitys liaison for the search process.
The principals of EMN/Witt/Kiefer visited the campus in November, conducting focus group sessions with faculty, staff, students, board members and community representatives. Working with the Search Committee, the firm has placed a position announcement in appropriate publications and developed a detailed position specification. The Colleges Board reviewed the position specification at its December 14, 2000, meeting, after a lengthy workshop on the search process. According to the timeline prepared by EMN/Witt/Kiefer, it is anticipated that a new Chancellor will be named by April 2001.
Information on the Chancellors search can be viewed on the Colleges website, www.uvawise.edu.
DISCUSSION: Mr. William Crutchfield will give an update on the search process.
