BOARD OF VISITORS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
EDUCATIONAL POLICY COMMITTEE
June 13, 1997
2:00-3:00 p.m., East Oval Room, The Rotunda
- I. CONSENT AGENDA
- Five
Board policies were referred to the Educational Policy Committee
by the Board as a result of the work of the Ad Hoc Committee on
Policy Reform. Two of these policies are outdated and should be
rescinded; the third needs technical revision.
- A. RESOLUTION ON CLASSIFIED INFORMATION -- The 1977 Resolution on Classified Information (which has to do with a kind of research in which the University no longer engages); it should be rescinded.
- B. POLICY ON THE PROTECTION OF HUMAN SUBJECTS IN MEDICAL RESEARCH -- The 1972 Policy on the Protection of Human Subjects in Medical Research (which remains on the books even though a new [and still appropriate] policy was adopted by the Board in 1992); it should be rescinded.
- C. POLICY ON COMPENSATION FOR SUMMER EMPLOYMENT -- This policy requires technical revision. The 1988 Policy on Compensation for Summer Employment requires amendment to and to remove reconform to the Commonwealth's new system of lag pay and to remove redundant language.
- A. RESOLUTION ON CLASSIFIED INFORMATION -- The 1977 Resolution on Classified Information (which has to do with a kind of research in which the University no longer engages); it should be rescinded.
- II. REPORTS BY THE VICE PRESIDENT AND PROVOST
- Prior
to Mr. Block's presentation, two information items will be briefly
discussed.
- A.1. VICE PRESIDENT'S REMARKS
- A.2. SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE DEPARTMENT NAME CHANGE -- The first involves the change of the name of one of the departments in the School of Engineering and Applied Science. There will be no substantive change in the work of the department.
- A.3. POLICY REVISION -- Two Board policies, recommended for study by the Ad Hoc Committee, require more extensive study before recommendations can be made. They are the Copyright Policy and the Patent Policy. Proposed revisions of these policies will be presented to the Board at a future meeting.
- B. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AT THE UNIVERSITY -- Mr. Block will illustrate the kinds of research to which the Board's patent policy will apply.
- A.1. VICE PRESIDENT'S REMARKS
