New Classroom Building at Clinch Valley College
- BACKGROUND:
In October 1997, the College completed construction of its first
new classroom building in twenty-five years. The building was
constructed with funds approved by Virginia’s citizens in the
General Obligation Bond program of 1992.
- DISCUSSION:
The building is currently being called the new classroom building
or the connector building. Rather than refer to the building by
a generic name, the College recommends naming the building "Commonwealth
Hall." The Clinch Valley College Advisory Council and the
University Names Committee have approved a resolution to make
this change.
- ACTION
REQUIRED: Approval by the Board of Visitors.
- B.2.
Chancellor's Residence
- BACKGROUND:
The Chancellor’s residence at Clinch Valley College was built
in 1991. The residence is, of course, a home for the
- Chancellor
and his family and it is used as well for many public functions
that support College programs and activities. The Clinch Valley
College Advisory Council and the University Names Committee have
approved a resolution to name the residence "Lila Vicars Smith".
- DISCUSSION:
The Smith family of Wise County has been extremely supportive
of the College over the years. Carl Smith has made generous contributions
to a number of things at the College, including gifts for the
Chancellor's residence in memory of his mother, Lila Vicars Smith.
Mrs. Smith, who was respected for her graciousness, had early
roots in the Town of Wise. She believed in the value of education
and she was determined that her son have a quality education and
to be prepared to succeed and contribute to his community.
- ACTION
REQUIRED: Approval by the Board of Visitors.
