BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS COMMITTEE
May

CONSENT AGENDA
- A.
ARCHITECT SELECTIONS, TERM CONTRACTS -- Architects for two term
contracts will be presented for consideration by the Buildings
and Grounds Committee. One contract is for the Academic Division.
The other is for the Medical Center. Term contracts are used for
the engagement of architecture and engineering firms to provide
investigations, cost estimates, designs and related services for
small capital construction projects. Most projects completed under
term contracts are renovations. Since the cost of a term project
can exceed $500,000, Board approval of the architect selection
is required. Ellerbe Becket of Washington, DC is recommended for
the Medical Center contract. Mitchell / Matthews & Associates
of Charlottesville, Virginia is recommended for the Academic Division
contract.
- B.
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN GUIDELINES, SPECIAL COLLECTIONS LIBRARY --
The Special Collections Library will be a two story underground
structure located in front of Alderman Library with an above ground
entrance building on the site of Miller Hall. The Committee approved
architectural design guidelines on January 8, 1993. Hartman Cox,
the project architect, and the Architect for the University have
prepared revised guidelines to reflect the design and program
changes that have occurred over the last five years.
- C.
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN GUIDELINES, CLINCH VALLEY COLLEGE SCIENCE
BUILDING -- This project includes the renovation of the Science
Building and the construction of a 37,000 gross square foot addition.
The building was constructed in 1965; this is its first major
renovation. The project will correct maintenance and code deficiencies
and will accommodate program needs for both current and projected
enrollments. VMDO, the project architect, and the Architect for
the University have developed architectural design guidelines.
- D.
ASSIGNMENT OF THE PAVILION VIII APARTMENT -- A faculty committee,
working out of the Provost's Office, has solicited and received
applications from teaching faculty for assignment to the upper
apartment in Pavilion VIII. In reviewing the applications, the
committee looked most seriously at applicants who would be "good
Lawn residents." The committee selected Cristina Della Coletta,
Assistant Professor of Italian.
