I.
College Name Change
BACKGROUND: In October 1997, the Clinch Valley College Advisory
Council reviewed the College's draft strategic plan. As a result
of its discussion, the Council requested that the College administration
conduct a marketing study to identify the institutions strengths
and weaknesses. The marketing study identified the Colleges
name and the lack of public understanding of its relationship
to the University as weaknesses.
As a result of the marketing study findings, the Clinch Valley
College Advisory Council asked the College administration to
undertake a formal study of whether the name of the institution
should be changed. This issue has been raised about every five
years and has been a subject of much discussion throughout the
College's history.
The College held a series of open forums with students, staff,
faculty, and alumni and friends throughout the Commonwealth,
and conducted a quantitative marketing study. The University
has contracted for a marketing study to evaluate the possible
impact on it.
The Rector on January 9, appointed a special committee to review
this proposal; the committee will report to the full Board on
January 29th.
DISCUSSION: The Clinch Valley College Board recommends that
the name of the College be changed to the University of Virginia
- Wise.
