I. A. Chancellor's Report
- BACKGROUND:
The Chancellor will report on items of interest to the Committee.
DISCUSSION: The Chancellor will provide a brief summary of issues at The University of Virginia's College at Wise of which the Board should be aware, but do not require Board action.
ACTION REQUIRED: None
I. B. NCAA Status
- BACKGROUND:
The intercollegiate athletic program plays an important role in
enhancing the student life of the College and the quality of life
in the larger community. During the past decade, the College has
made substantial investments in changes and upgrades to the program
and its facilities. Historically, the College has had an affiliation
with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
- DISCUSSION: During this past summer, the College began the process of becoming a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The College was notified in the early fall that it has been accepted as a provisional member of the NCAA, competing at the Division II level. Provisional membership status in the NCAA lasts four years. During that time, the College must address a number of critical questions including the College's goals and expectations of its intercollegiate athletic program, financing, conference affiliation, and competitive niche.

I. C. Center for Teaching Excellence
-
BACKGROUND: The University of Virginia's College at Wise is the
primary provider of teacher training in Southwest Virginia. The
College has certified approximately 2,000 teachers since 1970,
and the majority of those are teaching in our region. The local
school divisions recognize the College as a very important partner
in achieving their missions.
DISCUSSION: The need for a Center for Teaching Excellence to serve as a bridge between the public schools and the academic program at the College grew out of several discussions with the public school superintendents from the coalfield counties. The proposed Center would serve as a regional educational resource by:
- Maintaining a library of state approved textbooks
- Providing additional in-service opportunities
- Assisting in integrating technology into the curriculum
- Addressing needs identified by SOL testing
- Providing and maintaining a teaching and learning website appropriate to the needs of the public schools in our region.
ACTION REQUIRED: None
I. D. Student Outcomes
- BACKGROUND:
One of our most important forms of accountability is understanding
the effect of the College on students who study here. It is critical
that reliable information about the quality of the educational
experience at the College be available.
DISCUSSION: The progress of students is closely monitored through the assessment program. This item will allow for a presentation of data from several reports that together constitute a reliable and valid estimate of the value the College adds to the lives of its students. These reports, or "Student Outcomes," include an estimate of student satisfaction.
ACTION REQUIRED: None
