Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT)
ADAPT is dedicated to addressing the issues of alcohol and other drug abuse in the University of Virginia community. As peer educators, we promote awareness, provide educational outreach, and serve as accessible resources for our fellow students. Our primary purpose is to minimize the abuse of alcohol and other drugs in an effort to promote a healthier environment at our University.
ADAPT members have been trained on a variety of topics relating to substance abuse and are familiar with additional resources available to U.Va. students. To schedule an educational program with ADAPT members you must submit complete and submit the program request form. You may also email ADAPT at adapt-uva@virginia.edu.
21st Birthday Card Program
The 21st birthday card program was created in December 2000 by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT) peer educators. The goal of the project is to encourage students turning 21 to celebrate in a low risk manner.
Featuring a photo of fireworks over the Rotunda, the printed card include President Casteen's signature along with a birthday message signed by over 25 student organizations.
The cards include an informational insert containing a gender-specific BAC Chart, signs of alcohol poisoning, and emergency resource numbers. Students also receive a coupon for a local restaurant.
Evaluations of the cards suggest that the program has had a positive effect. A detailed description of the program appeared in the Bacchus and Gamma Peer Educator magazine in October 2001. To see a copy of the card, go to the ADAPT web site then click on "21st birthday cards" on the left side
Substance Abuse Awareness Week (SAAW)
SAAW is a week of fun and educational programs geared toward raising the awareness of dangerous drinking habits at the University. It is held every year during the week before the last home football game and coincides with effort to combat the tradition of the "Fourth-Year Fifth" (drinking a fifth of liquor during the last home football game of your fourth year). The programs cover a wide range of topics, including facts about alcohol and drug abuse, treatment of problem behavior, and tips on how to have responsibility for oneself and others. Publicity also includes recent research that indicated that only 10% of fourth-years attempted the fourth-year fifth in 2004. The week is planned by a steering committee made up of various groups on Grounds. ADAPT serves as the coordinating group and facilitates meetings of this steering committee.
Impaired Driving Prevention Strategies
The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team at UVA coordinates a series of programs to promote the use of sober drivers and to decrease the number students who report driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
These prevention strategies largely target students who drink on the “Corner”. The Corner district is a strip of shops and restaurants adjacent to the University where some students engage in high-risk drinking and may then drive home.
The Sober Driver Rewards Program, Yellow Cab program, and Impaired Driving Social Norm message are designed to decrease the number of impaired drivers and increase participation in the sober driver program. Click here to view a summary of impaired driving prevention strategies at UVA.
Safe Spring Break
Safe Spring Break activities are designed to encourage students to stay safe and responsible during the break. ADAPT sponsors flyers, ads, and staffed awareness tables to distribute information and free Spring Break Survival Kit.
Impaired Driving Prevention at the Spring Foxfield RacesADAPT efforts to prevent impaired driving at the Foxfield Races were recognized as a model program in the Bacchus and Gamma “Along These Lines” Impaired Driving Prevention Programming Manual and Resource Guide.
