Danube River Cruise
August 27 - September 7, 2007
U.Va. Faculty: Lawrence O. Goedde, Professor of Art History and Chair,McIntire Department of Art
Registration is Open
Join us for a waltz along the fabled "Blue Danube," through the heart of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire. This 12-day river cruise aboard the Deluxe ms River Odyssey sails through some of the most picturesque and culturally rich regions in Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary. The great cities of Europe grew up along the historic waterways that served as the continent's first highways, so exploring by river offers the best perspective possible, from scenic countryside views to intimate encounters with medieval towns and venerable city centers. Sightseeing and cultural experiences range from the baroque architecture of Drnstein to the musical landmarks of Salzburg to the royal palaces of Vienna. Plus, you can enhance your trip with extensions in Prague or Budapest. This is a joint program with Washington & Lee University and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
- All outside cabins
- Sightseeing tours in Germany: Nuremberg (choose from medieval or WWII tours), the monastery in Weltenburg, and Passau, the "The City on Three Rivers".
- Austria: a full day in Salzburg and two full days in Vienna, plus a walking tour of Durnstein, the "Pearl of the Wachau".
- Slovakia: tour the capital city of Bratislava.
- Hungary: tour the capital city of Budapest.
- Lectures on Nuremberg and World War II, The European Union, The Habsburgs, Musical Vienna, and The Main-Danube Canal.
- Plus, beer tasting at a monastery brewery, concerts, waltz lessons, local entertainment aboard ship, and other "cultural connections".
- The ms River Odyssey was christened in 2003 and refurbished in the winter of 2006. The passenger capacity is 168 with a staff of 48. The boat features an elegant dining room, well-appointed bar and lounge with panoramic views, a library, covered and uncovered sundecks, walking track, and state-of-the-art silencers for noise and vibration suppression.
All cabins are outside cabins with a view. Each cabin features a color TV with in-room movies and CNN, telephone, private bath with shower, hair dryer, and a PIN-coded safe. Junior Suites are 225 square feet, with a 32" LCD flat screen TV, DVD player, minibar, coffee/tea maker, phone, sitting area, and more.
- 29 Meals: 10 breakfasts, 9 lunches, and 10 dinners with wine included; plus special Captain's Welcome and Farewell Dinners.

A scholar of Baroque art in Europe, Professor Goedde’s areas of specialization include Northern Baroque art—especially 17th century Dutch painting; early Netherlandish painting; and Old Master prints. Terms & Conditions
The terms and conditions on this Tour Participation Agreement govern the relationship between you, the passenger, and us, Vantage Travel Service, Inc., d/b/a Vantage Deluxe World Travel. By booking a trip, you agree to be bound by this Tour Participation Agreement. It outlines, among other things, our cancellation policy and certain limitations of liability. These terms affect your rights to sue, governing law, forum, and jurisdiction; please be sure to carefully read these terms and make sure you understand your rights and obligations and our rights and obligations. We strongly recommend that you purchase travel protection.
Making Changes (Land and River Only)
If you need to change your plans, Vantage Deluxe World Travel understands. On most programs, travel deviations that affect destination, departure date, programs extension, and the like are allowed - provided they are requested in writing prior to the final payment due date. Deviations are subject to a modest non-refundable per-person processing fee. Please note that additional deviation fees may be imposed by airlines, hotels, or cruise lines. Again, no changes can be accepted after the final payment due date. All changes, even if allowable, are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.
If You Must Cancel
Vantage Deluxe World Travel realizes that most people who cancel their reservations do so out of real necessity. Nevertheless, cancellations are costly to administer, involving toll calls and other time-consuming communications. Therefore, all cancellations are subject to a $500 per-person, non-refundable administrative fee. All payments for travel services not provided to the passenger shall be refunded in accordance with these General Terms and Conditions and in accordance with Vantage's cancellation policy, unless the passenger otherwise instructs Vantage, in writing. Please contact our Customer Service department to cancel your reservations. Refund requests must be in writing - indicating the reason for cancellation - and received by the respective final payment due date to avoid additional cancellation charges.
The following cancellation fees, including administrative fees apply:
180 days or more prior to departure: $500*
180 to 0 days prior to departure, including no shows: 100%*
*Per person, based on the full program price and does not include any airfare cancellation fees, non-refundable Passenger Travel Protection Plan fees, or nominal administration fee. There may be additional cancellation penalties on certain excursions and extensions; see your tour flyers for details.
Passports and Visas
A valid passport is required on international programs. Non-U.S. citizens are advised to contact the appropriate consulate office for entry requirements pertaining to their trip. You will be notified if your destination requires a visa. The "Answer Book" information booklet you receive after making your reservation outlines procedures for obtaining a visa. Please beware that your tickets and other tour documentation must bear your name exactly as it appears on your passport.
In order to provide you with the lowest possible domestic airfares, Vantage Deluxe World Travel takes advantage of special promotional fares. These fares can be quite restrictive and carry cancellation charges imposed by the airlines ranging up to 100% of the cost. The price shown on the air ticket may be higher or lower than the price actually paid. If higher, Vantage absorbs the cost difference. If lower, the difference is not refunded by Vantage. Therefore, any penalties resulting from changes or cancellations to home city airfares after they are ticketed will be the responsibility of the passenger. If you must cancel your trip after you have received your tickets, you are required to return the tickets to Vantage Deluxe World Travel before we can process any refunds that may be due to you. Home city airfares are ticketed approximately 21 days prior to the program departure date. Vantage Deluxe World Travel and/or the respective cruise lines reserve the right to choose the airline and routing for all tours. Seat requests will be taken at time of booking, but in most cases they cannot be guaranteed by the airline or, as result, by Vantage Deluxe World Travel.
International and domestic air schedules are subject to change at any time. If you do make your own domestic reservations, Vantage Deluxe World Travel recommends that you do not purchase tickets with high penalty charges for changes. Should you make your own arrangements, Vantage Deluxe World Travel will not be responsible for any loss resulting from cancellations or changes in international gateways or travel dates, and you will be responsible for your own transfers to and from the airport. If an air schedule requires an overnight stay in a gateway city, Vantage Deluxe World Travel can assist with hotel reservations. However, overnights are at your expense unless specified in writing. All air routings are subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed.
Vantage reserves the right to correct promotional or pricing errors at any time, or to increase the program price in the event of cost increases due to changes in airfares or cruise fares, currency fluctuations, park fee increases, taxes or fuel surcharges. Vantage reserves the right to take photographic or film records of any of its trips, and to use such photographic or film records for promotional and/or commercial purposes. By traveling with Vantage, you consent to the use of your image and likeness for these limited purposes.
You must advise us in writing, at the time of booking, or, if later, immediately upon your becoming aware, of any physical, emotional or mental condition that may require professional attention or the use of special equipment. If so afflicted, you must obtain a doctor's certification that you are fit to travel and are capable of participating in the tour. This certification must be submitted prior to departure. Your failure to disclose any such condition, and/or to provide the requisite doctor's certification, or your arrival at the place of departure with special equipment that has not been approved for the tour, will result in our refusal to allow you to take the trip. In any such event, you will forfeit the trip cost, and we shall have no liability, financial or otherwise. Furthermore, the failure to advise us of any such condition shall release Vantage from any liability related to such condition or its treatment.
You must bring and be responsible for all necessary items related to your condition, including any special equipment that is permitted on tour. Because the tour accommodations and transportation facilities, including the riverboats, are not owned or operated in the U.S., they are not required to meet the standards established by U.S. law for the physically challenged. Certain tour features, including third party transfer services, hotel accommodations, and other land excursion facilities, and certain trips, are not wheelchair or scooter accessible, and may be difficult for the physically challenged. In particular, the riverboats are not equipped with wheelchair or scooter accessible cabins, and therefore, safety reasons preclude allowing wheelchairs or scooters on board. If you have limited mobility, you may find it difficult to embark or disembark the riverboat or ocean cruise vessel at certain times due to steep gangways and steps, particularly during low or high tide. Situations may occur in which you may not be able to go ashore at the desired time, and possibly not at all, in certain ports. Furthermore, if the cruise package includes a non-U.S. land tour either before or after the cruise portion, it may not be possible to accommodate wheelchairs or scooters on the entire tour (even if the cruise line has the on-board capacity to do so) since as a general matter accommodations and transfer services outside the U.S. are not handicap accessible. For the safety of all concerned, the Captain will make the final determination regarding your ability to embark or disembark the riverboat or ocean cruise vessel with or without the assistance of your equipment, taking into account all appropriate matters, including but not limited to, weather conditions, ship's location, your condition at the time, etc. Walkers and canes are permitted, however, you may find that your participation in certain tour features may be restricted.
You must bring a capable traveling companion to assist you if you will have any difficulty attending to such basic needs as dressing, eating, moving about, or participating in safety drills. Neither Program personnel, nor the riverboat crews, are able to provide this care for you. Vantage reserves the right to decline any trip participant whose condition, in our opinion, may affect the health and safety of other participants. We cannot accommodate women past their sixth month of pregnancy. Vantage is not responsible for the costs of any medical treatment you may require during the trip. Under no circumstance is Vantage responsible for the quality of medical care, or lack thereof, you may receive while on the trip.

Without limiting the foregoing, Vantage is not responsible for any losses or expenses due to delay or changes in schedules, overbooking or downgrading of accommodations, default of any third parties, including Suppliers, mechanical or other failure of airplanes or other means of transportation or for failure of any transportation mechanism to arrive or depart on time, sanitation problems, lack of medical care, sickness, weather, strikes, acts of God, acts of terrorism, force majeure, acts of war (declared or undeclared), quarantine, criminal activity, or for any other cause beyond the direct control of Vantage. For Vantage River Cruises, you are bound by all the Terms and Conditions of the applicable Passenger Ticket Contract, copies of which are provided to you prior to tour departure. On Vantage River Cruises, in the event that an itinerary must be altered or shore excursions eliminated, or itinerary changed due to water levels, Vantage will arrange comparable alternate sightseeing whenever possible; there will be no refunds in this circumstance. To the extent that Vantage is involved in booking air and/or cruise transportation for you, Vantage acts as your agent and not as an agent of the air carrier and/or cruise line. For all other purposes, Vantage does not act as an agent for any party whatsoever. Vantage Deluxe World Travel assumes no financial responsibility for any cancellations or delays resulting from invalid passports, visas, or other travel document requirements, or for ticket or other travel documents that do not reflect your name exactly as it appears on your passport. Vantage Deluxe World Travel reserves the right to change the itinerary of the tour without prior notice. If the tour is canceled by Vantage Deluxe World Travel for any reason, Vantage Deluxe World Travel shall have no liability beyond the prompt refund of all tour participants' payments received by it. The common carriers used are not responsible for any act, omission, or event during the time the tour participants are not aboard their conveyances. Any claim against Vantage arising out of, or in connection with, this agreement must be brought in the Courts of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to the exclusion of the Courts of any other state and country. For this purpose, Vantage and the customer specifically consent to the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts' courts, and in connection therewith, each agrees that Massachusetts has a significant relationship to this agreement. The payment of a deposit for this tour by the person or persons making such deposits shall be deemed to be an acceptance by each of them of all of the terms and conditions of this agreement.
