Over the last 20 years, the Department has developed great strengths and a strong national reputation in a number of research areas,including cell adhesion, cell migration, intracellular transport and trafficking, and reproductive cell biology. In addition to these research accomplishments the faculty has continued achieving excellence in its medical school and graduate teaching missions. The faculty in Cell Biology and other departments at UVa are working to build on this success and to move in exciting new directions. A new emphasis for research will be the problem of morphogenesis, combining cellular/molecular, genetic, and advanced imaging approaches to discover the basic principles underlying tissue, organ, and organism development. These efforts will be achieved through recruiting new faculty members to broaden and enhance our research activities in these areas, by participation with the Morphogenesis and Regenerative Medicine Institute, and through the growth of the Cell and Developmental Biology Graduate Program. The Department is undertaking these new endeavors with much excitement and enthusiasm; please join us and take note of our efforts and follow our progress as we work towards these goals.
