Sylvia Hurtado is Associate Professor at the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on understanding college contexts for the success of diverse college students.
Hurtado's career as a nationally recognized researcher has allowed her to coordinate several research projects. She is launching a federally-funded project examining the ways colleges prepare college students to achieve the cognitive, social, and democratic skills to participate in a diverse democracy.
Hurtado has published articles and research reports and serves on the editorial boards of many major higher education publications. Her latest publication is a book titled Enacting Diverse Learning Environments (1999). She has also served on numerous professional boards including the American Association of Higher Education, the Midwest Consortium for Latino Research, and the Association for the Study of Higher Education. Most recently, she served on a special American Education Research Association panel on Racial Dynamics in Colleges and Universities.
Hurtado received degrees from the University of California, Los Angeles, Harvard's Graduate School of Education, and Princeton University.
