William E. Kirwan became the twelfth President of The Ohio State University in 1998. He leads one of the nation's largest and most distinguished public universities and is widely respected as an academic leader and known for his talent as a consensus builder within a large campus community. Before his appointment at The Ohio State University, Dr. Kirwan was a member of the faculty and administrator at the University of Maryland, College Park for thirty-four years.

A prolific scholar, Kirwan is co-editor of the book Advances in Complex Analysis and other articles on mathematical research. He serves on numerous boards, including the Presidents' Round Table of the Ford Foundation, the Council for the International Exchange of Students (the Fulbright Program), the President's Commission of the NCAA, and the World Trade Center Institute.

Kirwan received his undergraduate education at the University of Kentucky, and his masters and doctoral degrees from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
