Eugene Y. Lowe Jr. has been Assistant to the President of Northwestern University since August 1999. Lowe is a senior lecturer in the Department of Religion and an historian of American religion. He focuses his academic work on religion and social change in 19th and 20th century America.

Prior to this, Lowe was a research associate at the Mellon Foundation from 1993 to 1997, working on its study in diversity in American higher education, "Pluralism: Patterns, Perils, and Prospects," involving about fifty colleges and universities as part of the Foundation's research program in higher education. The study is an examination of the experience of change in American colleges and universities, which focuses on undergraduate admission, campus life, the development of curriculum and patterns of faculty engagement in issues of diversity as well as presidential leadership. He also edited the book Promise and Dilemma: Perspectives on Racial Diversity in Higher Education (1999).

An ordained Episcopal priest, Lowe attended Princeton University and received his masters degree and Ph.D. in church history from Union Theological Seminary.
