About the U.Va. Center for International Studies
The U.Va. Center for International Studies serves as a research center for faculty, staff, and students from the University of Virginia and from institutions around the world. Its mission is to provide a University-wide focus on global education as well as to link research universities, institutes, and scholars in the U.S. and abroad. It convenes U.Va. faculty to identify big research questions and challenges of the twenty-first century, to formulate research proposals, and to undertake fundraising to support research. Critical to the Center's mission is the formation of interdisciplinary, University-wide faculty Working Groups on international issues of critical importance.
The Center is also engaged in a wide range of knowledge-building activities. In the spring of 2011, the Center hosted a conference on Women's Control of Income & Assets, and a conference on the U.S.-Turkish-Israeli Strategic Triangle to use the topic to shed light on changing issues in the Middle East region - including Iran, the Arab-Israeli peace process, and political Islam. In addition, the Center hosts its popular interdisciplinary Seminar Series for the duration of the academic year, bringing together scholars from within and without the University community, students, and community members. Twice yearly, the Center accepts applications for faculty grants and fellowships, which have multiple endeavors: to finance long- and short-term visits from international scholars; to encourage new innovations in curriculum globalization; and to promote the development of study abroad programs in destinations new or of strategic importance to the University.
In all its endeavors, the Center draws on insight and support from members of the University's multi-disciplinary International Programs Advisory Committee. The Center continues to help U.Va. to become the destination of choice for international scholars, practitioners, and students as well as for American students who seek an undergraduate or graduate education that is fully infused with international perspectives and offers a broad range of opportunities to engage in international research and experiences.
