We plan to discuss the history of the Dominican Republic, Trujillo's brutal dictatorship, and read Julia Alvarez's amazing novel, In the Time of the Butterflies. Presenters will include Tico Braun (on the history of the DR), Mané Lagos (on women's writing in LA), and Gustavo Pellón (on Vargas Llosa's astonishing La fiesta del chivo). In addition, we have scheduled a phone interview with JULIA ALVAREZ, an opportunity for you to talk with her and ask questions. We will screen several short scenes from the movie version of "In the Time of the Butterflies" (with Salma Hayek and Edward James Olmos).

I URGE you to read In the Time of the Butterflies before the workshop; if you can, also read La fiesta del chivo. You will not regret this, I promise you. Both are easily available, new and used, from at http://www.amazon.com
