The Center for the Liberal Arts,
in cooperation with the
University of Virginia Bayly Art Museum, announces

"Creative Writing in the High School Classroom"

a free one-day Saturday Workshop for Virginia teachers
funded by the

Arthur Vining Davis Foundations

and also by a Grant from Commission for the Arts
Commonwealth of Virginia

This Workshop will be limited to 50 Participants

The workshop will begin at 9 AM on October 20, 2007, at the Art Museum and will include presentations and discussions for teachers, lunch, and an optional afternoon information session on the annual Museum's "Writer's Eye" contest. The
workshop is designed to assist teachers in helping their pupils write about objects of art, a process which is the focus on the
"Writer's Eye".

Participating teachers will listen to remarks from professional writers of poetry and fiction, including Sydney Blair and
Lisa Russ Spaar, who will discuss how their writing has been prompted by visual works or the way they have used visual works to prompt creative writing from students. Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in break-out groups that will each focus on an object of art. The teachers will also have the opportunity to peruse the Museum's current exhibits and to discuss scheduleing visits for their classes.
