The Shannon Foundation is now actively building an endowment fund to support its annual teacher awards and reduce its dependence on annual fundraising. Until 1995, the Foundation's Board of Directors raised and then distributed grant funds every year -- a task both exhausting and untenable in the long term. An initial $100,000 endowment goal was reached in the summer of 1997 with generous assistance from many local individual and corporate donors as well as matching grants from the Charlottesville-Albemarle Foundation and the Perry Foundation.
The Board has recently raised an additional $100,000 to match a generous challenge grant issued from the Perry Foundation in December 1997. Although the Foundation has met the Perry Foundation's challenge, the Board is continuing their fundraising efforts so as to increase the number of grants and amount of money bestowed every year.
All gifts to the Foundation are tax-deductible.

Since all adminstrative costs for the Foundation are funded through our own Board members' contributions, we devote one hundred percent of the gifts we receive from the public to the Shannon endowment, with all proceeds directly funding our annual awards to teachers.
