Southwest Virginia Public Education Consortium

My History Partner (grant from United States Department of Education “Teaching American History Program” 2010-2013) to Wythe County, VA schools and the Southwest Virginia Public Education Consortium:

Under this grant we have been adapting the My Teaching Partner (MTP) system of professional development supports and the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) in ways specific to the teaching of history. “My History Partner” combines content education and pedagogical support as teachers videotape themselves and return them to Charlottesville for scoring, then receive expert consultation that harnesses powerful historical resources assembled by faculty and graduate students. (Two other cohorts of teachers are receiving, respectively, only the content support or only the pedagogical support, so that we can judge the effectiveness of the new combination.) Meanwhile, researchers have been working on the development of the Protocol for Assessing the Teaching of History (PATH), and adaptation of CLASS that measures the effectiveness of teachers as teachers of history.

Upcoming Programs:

  • July 8-9, 2013 – “Methods Course in Teaching History”
  • July 15-16, 2013 – “The Executive Branch”

American Crises (grant from United States Department of Education “Teaching American History Program” 2007-2013) to Norton City, VA schools and the Southwest Virginia Public Education Consortium:

The goal of “American Crises, American Solutions” is to create a sustainable cohort of specialists who will serve as effective local resources, providing high-quality American history content, materials, and teaching strategies to their less knowledgeable or less experienced colleagues. Professional development activities include one-credit courses on Revolutionary America, Reconstruction, Progressive Era/New Deal, and the Great Society as well as in pedagogy so as to communicate content knowledge as effectively as possible. Teachers will, by the end of the grant, be specialists in American history with the tools to serve their colleagues and schools.

Upcoming Programs:

  • April 5-6, 2013 – “The Other Liberalism: The United States in Vietnam”
  • June 11, 2013 – Certificate Ceremony to be held at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, Abingdon, VA
