Information for Advisors

The following is information that may be helpful when meeting with your advisees.

Requirements for Major in Cognitive Science

1. Minimum of 30 credit hours of cognitive science courses. A complete list of courses approved for cognitive science is available from the Cognitive Science Coordinator (cogsci@virginia.edu). Courses may not be taken Credit/No Credit.

2. Minimum GPA in the major is 2.0. 3. Required courses:

A. Math 131, or Math 121 and 122. If the latter, only 122 will count towards the credit hours required for the major. A total of 2 calculus courses can count towards the major (such as 131 and 132). APMA 101 and 102 are equivalent to Math 131 and 132. Additional math courses (such as linear algebra )may be approved on an individual basis and you may ask for assistance in determining which courses should qualify.

B. At least one designated cognitive science course in the remaining 5 core areas (Cognitive Psychology, Philosophy, Computer Science, Linguistics and Neuroscience).

C. At least 2 400-level or above courses in one of the core areas.

4. Students who double-major must have 18 credits that are applied exclusively to Cognitive Science and 18 credit hours that are applied exclusively to their other major. Additional credit hours may be shared between the two majors and must be sufficient to make each major add up to 30 credit hours. For your assistance, Double Major Worksheets may be found at the Cog. If you have questions or need help while meeting with a student, please contact Terri Taft, Cognitive Science Program Coordinator, cogsci@virginia.edu or 982-3019. She is available to help during the advising period and will provide you with each of your student's VISTAA forms indicating what they need to take to complete the major and fulfill other University requirements.

The Online Tools allows you to create a online schedule for the advising period and e-mail each or all of your students the information. Students can then make appointments in your designated times.
