South Lawn Project Update: June 2007

Work on parking lots near the South Lawn Project continues in anticipation of the current B-1 parking lot closing on June 22. A gravel parking lot is being constructed at 434 Brandon Avenue. Striping has begun at a newly expanded parking lot adjacent to Bice House at 583 Brandon Avenue.

To install utilities, boring under Jefferson Park Avenue has begun. The work, which is being conducted daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., includes the use of boring machines. Duct bank work, which entails excavation, pouring of concrete, backfilling of soil and repaving, begins in early June along the south side of JPA.

To prepare for the utilities installation, a variety of work is underway on the north side of JPA, next to New Cabell Hall. The work includes grading, removal of trees and shrubs, installation of fencing, and placement of stone.

University-owned residences at 409, 411 and 503 Valley Road will be demolished soon to begin installing a storm water management basin, which will help to contain and cleanse water and site run-off during construction. Once the storm water basin project is completed, it will cleanse water and run-off from Central Grounds, JPA and the South Lawn site. The basin area will be fully planted and landscaped after the construction.

Use of a new temporary bus stop begins this week. A temporary sidewalk will be installed along the south side of JPA. For the protection of pedestrians, concrete barriers will be placed along the sidewalk. Trees along the northern edge of the B-1 lot will be removed. The cross walk will be maintained.
