Letter from the Chief Facilities Officer, Donald E. Sundgren:

Everyone,

Congratulations and many thanks to all Facilities Management employees for your valuable contributions to another successful Day of Caring last Wednesday. Your accomplishments and energy in those 8+ hours seem to get more miraculous every year!

When I stopped in at Camp Holiday Trails, I was impressed with your focus and good humor as you tackled more than a dozen projects around the camp’s grounds and facilities.  Some of those projects took you under buildings, into attics and some daunting terrain, but you didn’t let spiders, splinters, nails or rumor of snakes slow you down!   Your tasks included cleaning, painting, trail clearing, mulching, gutter cleaning as well as HVAC and masonry repairs, carpentry installations and repair, and completely gutting the cabin bathrooms for follow-on volunteers to install  new  handicapped accessible bathrooms. All that was hard work but your Day of Caring spirit was contagious.  Everything you did will allow those special campers to have more trails to explore, nicer grounds to run through, and cleaner, brighter and safer buildings to enjoy.

I saw the pictures from the Senior Center and Babe Ruth Lane Field and wish that my schedule had allowed me to visit you there.

The Senior Center’s elderly guests will continue to have a brighter “outlook,” literally and figuratively, because of the Housekeepers and Electricians who made their annual visit for polishing and “fixing up.”  I heard that the seniors always enjoy talking with you as you work and were amazed at how fast you had the windows and surfaces sparkling and the parking lot lights working. You were named “most popular visitors” again this year.

Landscapers, the Babe Ruth Little Leaguers will play proudly on their professionally rejuvenated field.   Their parents and families will also be pleased to know that your timely aeration and reseeding of the field will ensure a safer turf surface for their children as they go sliding into base.

I also want to thank the 800 Facilities Management employees who stayed at their regular jobs and filled in for the other 150 so they could volunteer for Day of Caring.  Many of you volunteered last year and will have another turn next year for the fun and teamwork and the resulting tired backs and knees.

Thank you for your work on September 17 and around the clock throughout the year.  The University and our community are proud of you.
