Construction/Renovation Project Updates

 

Bavaro Hall

Construction on Bavaro Hall, located between Ruffner Hall and Emmet Street, is 20 percent complete. Concrete foundations are being poured and steel erection continues. A large crane for the remaining steel erection will be brought to the site in early March. The new 65,000 square-foot building will provide additional academic, research and clinical program space for U.Va.’s Curry School of Education. Completion is expected in August 2010. Carter-Harrison Research Building

Construction of the Carter-Harrison building (MR-6) is nearing completion.  The building exterior is substantially complete with only site work remaining. Occupancy is scheduled for March.  Normal traffic patterns have been permanently restored on Crispell Drive and at the South Garage entrances. Chilled Water to Pavilion II and Madison Hall

Work continues on a utility project to install chilled water lines from an area northwest of the Rotunda to Madison Hall and to Pavilion II. The project involves excavation northwest of the Rotunda, north of Madison Hall, southeast of Brooks Hall, southeast of the Hotel B, and in the Pavilion II/IV parking lot. Emily Couric Cancer Center

Construction of the Emily Couric Cancer Center, located at the corner of Lee Street and Jefferson Park Avenue, continues. The center will house all outpatient services for adults diagnosed with cancer. The center is expected to open in spring 2011. Hospital Bed Expansion

A Hospital Bed Expansion Project will add 72 private patient rooms and support areas to the front of University Hospital on Lee Street. The front entry to the hospital is closed for the duration of the project. Vehicular drop-off is located on the south side of Lee Street west of the former front entry. Pedestrian access is being maintained to the east and west of the former front entry. Steel erection is expected to begin in March, occurring from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., weather permitting. Monroe Hall

Renovation of Monroe Hall is underway. The renovation includes the replacement of flooring, windows and HVAC systems. When complete, the building will have 10 classrooms and more than 70 offices for use by the College of Arts and Sciences. The project is expected to be complete in the summer.

Printing and Copying Service Building

Construction is 65 percent complete for the addition of approximately 15,000 square feet to the south side of the Printing and Copying Service Building located at 2474 Old Ivy Road. Interior painting, electrical wiring, and sprinkler piping will occur in the upcoming weeks. The project is expected to be complete by late May. South Lawn

Brick installation on the South Building is complete and masonry work on the North Building is underway. Drywall is now being installed in the South Building. Base concrete for the curved stair is in place. Work on interior ducts, steel studs, plumbing and sprinklers, and window installation is ongoing. The project is approximately 57 percent complete. Whitehead Road Projects

Work continues on two U.Va. facilities, a College of Arts and Sciences Research Building and an Information Technology Engineering Building, being constructed along the north side of Whitehead Road. The buildings are key components in U.Va.’s emphasis on science and technology. For more information, visit www.virginia.edu/communityrelations.
