University of Virginia Seeks President-Selection Input
After 20 years, John T. Casteen III will step down as U.Va. president on August 1, 2010. The Special Committee on the Nomination of a President is offering six forums in August and September to give faculty, students, community members, alumni, friends, and staff of the University an opportunity to provide advice to the search committee regarding the qualifications and characteristics of the University's next president. The forums are open to anyone interested in offering advice to the committee. Students Arrive Soon for Fall Semester
First-year students will move into their residence halls on Saturday, August 22. Police estimate that “Move-In Day” will bring more than 6,000 cars, many arriving as early as 7:30 a.m., and more than 15,000 people to Grounds. U.Va. police will be on duty along Emmet, McCormick, Stadium, and Alderman Roads to assist with traffic. Classes begin on Tuesday, August 25. |
Numerous Special Events Welcome Returning Student
In addition to Move-In Day, some student events could bring pedestrian traffic and noise to areas adjacent to the University. They include:
Block Party - Saturday, August 22, 8-11 p.m. at the John Paul Jones Arena
Newcomb Hall Crawl - Sunday, August 23, 9 p.m. – midnight
Students will learn about services and programs in Newcomb Hall. Although most activities will be held inside Newcomb Hall, singing groups will perform on the terrace adjacent to the bookstore.
Food Fest - Tuesday, August 25, 5-7 p.m.
Students will gather at Alumni Hall for an event that will include activities in the outdoor courtyard areas.
Rotunda Sing - Wednesday, August 26, 8–10 p.m.
A cappella groups, using microphones and amplified sound, will perform on the Rotunda steps.
On Saturday, August 29, first-year students will participate in Project Serve, a program that promotes public service by matching U.Va. students with community-wide volunteer opportunities.

Virginia Football 2009 Home Opener Slated for Saturday, September 5
The Cavaliers will play their home opener against William and Mary on Saturday, September 5, at 6 p.m. at Scott Stadium. Other home games include:

Art Museum Renovation Nears Completion
U.Va.’s Art Museum, which has been undergoing a significant renovation since spring, is slated to reopen on Saturday, September 12, with three special exhibits: "Thomas Jefferson's Academical Village: The Creation of an Architectural Masterpiece," "The Expanding Eye: Art Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe" and "Abstract Photography: Selections from Glenstone."
