University of Virginia Tops Best Value Ranking of Public Universities

A ranking released by the Princeton Review and USA Today named U.Va. as the university that offers the best and most affordable public education. The ranking is based on surveys submitted by more than 650 administrators and students at public and private universities. Bob Barker Donates $1 Million for Animal Law Program

Bob Barker, the former host of the game show “The Price is Right,” donated $1 million to establish an animal law program at U.Va.’s Law School. The gift will sponsor Virginia’s first formal course focused exclusively on animal law, speaker series on animal law topics, independent studies and externship opportunities, and a writing competition amongst graduate students. Construction Begins on Long-Term Acute Care Hospital

The U.Va. Medical Center began construction of a 40-bed long-term acute care hospital located next to the Medical Center’s Northridge Medical Office Building on U.S. 250 west. The hospital’s focus will be patients that need hospital care for more than 25 days, freeing space at the hospital on Lee Street. Curry School of Education Offers Lectureship Series

Starting January 30, U.Va.’s Curry School of Education will begin its 2009 Research Lectureship Series. The one-hour presentations, which begin at 11 a.m. on select Fridays throughout the semester, will cover various topics such as Understanding Social Cognition in Children with Autism and Promoting the Social-Emotional and Literacy Development of Low-Income Children. Employees Donate Record $923,432 through Workplace-Giving Campaign

U.Va. employees showed their generosity again this year by donating a record $923, 432 through the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign. More than 3,870 gifts benefited local non-profit organizations such as the Blue Ridge Area and Jefferson Area food banks and the Charlottesville Free Clinic.
