Incoming Students Visit Grounds for Summer Orientation
Approximately 4,000 incoming first-year and transfer students are expected to attend U.Va. summer orientation sessions from June 22 to July 24. Construction of New Residence Halls Scheduled for Summer
The Dobie, Balz and Watson houses, part of the Alderman Road dormitories, will come down, to be replaced by two new dorms that will house more students, be more efficient and greener. Construction is expected to begin during the first week of August.

U.Va. Summer Academy Welcomes Area Youth
About 30 students from Buford Middle School are participating in the Summer Math and Leadership Academy, sponsored by U.Va.'s Office for Diversity and Equity and the Charlottesville Public Schools. The two-week program, which runs through June 26, will give rising seventh- and eighth-graders a jump start on algebra and also introduce them to aspects of undergraduate college life. Projects Receive Funding through Jefferson Public Citizens Program
Sixteen student group projects at U.Va. received funding through the newly launched Jefferson Public Citizens program which aims to connect public service with academic life. In total, 80 students and 12 faculty received more than $350,000 as seed-funding for Commission for the Future of the University – initiatives previously approved by the board. Events Encourage Neighborhood Collaboration
This summer, the Hope Community Center located on 11th Street, is offering a collaborative series of community events called "Meet Your Neighbor" that will take place on Saturdays through August 22 in parks across Charlottesville. Furniture Donation Drives Benefit Area Residents
U.Va.’s end-of-year donation drives diverted hundreds of substantial household items from dumpsters in support of area charities and residents. Through the “Sofa Shuffle,” U.Va.’s Off-Grounds Furniture Donation Drive, 10 truckloads of household items and furniture were collected and donated to the Salvation Army and The Habitat Store. Through “Chuck it for Charity,” the on-Grounds recycling effort, 28,500 pounds of goods were donated to area charities.
