U.Va. Ranks First in African-American Graduation Rates

Bus Ridership Increases

More than 26,000 U.Va. students and employees rode the University’s or City of Charlottesville’s bus system each month during the past fall and winter. This is up from an average of 18,000 rides per month for the same period last year, according to Rebecca White, U.Va’s Director of Parking and Transportation for the University. Public Citizens Program Begins this Fall

The Jefferson Public Citizens program, a new initiative that integrates public service and research into the undergraduate curriculum, will begin this fall. The initiative includes a wide range of new courses, workshops and programs available to students who are passionate about public service. World Music Festival Scheduled for March 29

The first Virginia World Music Festival is slated for Sunday, March 29, at noon in U.Va.’s Old Cabel Hall. The free concert celebrates diversity and cross-cultural understanding. Featured performers include U.Va. ensembles and other groups specializing in world musical traditions from the College of William and Mary and the University of Richmond. Charlottesville Ten Miler Slated for April 4

The annual Charlottesville Ten Miler is scheduled for Saturday, April 4. The race will begin at 7:45 a.m. on Alderman Road and is expected to be completed by 10:30 a.m. Parts of the course will be closed to vehicular traffic. Proceeds from this year’s race will benefit People and Congregations Engaged in Ministry (PACEM). Art in Action Event Planned for April 5

Charlottesville Art in Action, an Afternoon of Art and Advocacy, is scheduled for Sunday, April 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. on U.Va.’s South Lawn. The event will celebrate the efforts of area organizations like the Charlottesville Community Scholarship Program, Music Resource Center, and the Shelter for Help and Emergency. Worldwide Effort Focuses on Energy Conservation

Earth Hour, a global event to create awareness of energy use and conservation, takes place Saturday, March 28, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Participants in more than 1,500 cities and towns, across 80 countries, will shut off non-essential lights and electronics. The University, which is encouraging students, staff and faculty to participate, will shut off lights at the Rotunda from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. in observance of the event.
