Fall Convocation Kicks Off Family Weekend
The University of Virginia’s annual Family Weekend takes place Friday, Oct. 24, through Sunday, Oct. 26, giving students’ families an opportunity to take in University life. Fall Convocation, which begins at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, at the John Paul Jones Arena, kicks off the weekend. University Librarian Karin Wittenborg will be the featured speaker. President John T. Casteen III will present intermediate honors and announce the winner of the Thomas Jefferson Award, the highest honor given to a member of the U.Va community.

Sustainability/New Facilities Topic of Recent Outreach Efforts
University leaders discussed new facilities and sustainability efforts during “Building on Jefferson’s Legacy, a U.Va. Community Briefing”, on Tuesday, Sept. 23, in Newcomb Hall Ballroom. Approximately 250 area residents and University community members attended the event, which included presentations by David Neuman, Architect for the University, Andrew Greene, Sustainability Planner for the Office of the University Architect, Tom Harkins, Chief of Environment of Care at the U.Va. Health System, and Rebecca White, U.Va. Parking and Transportation Director.

At the Oct. 7 Jefferson Park Avenue Neighborhood Association Meeting, Luis Carazzana, Senior Facility Planner in U.Va.’s Office of the Architect, and Don Sundgren, U.Va.’s Chief Facilities Officer, described construction of two new U.Va. facilities, a College of Arts and Sciences Research Building and an Information Technology Engineering Building, that will be erected along Whitehead Road.

Sustainability Focus of New Web Site
A new Web site provides information about environmental initiatives and sustainability at the University. The site includes the new 2008 Grounds Plan that promotes higher standards for sustainable planning and design, and outlines sustainability goals for the next two decades.

Ruffin Hall Dedicated
University faculty, students, board of directors and friends gathered on Oct. 2 to dedicate Ruffin Hall, the new home of studio art. Ruffin Hall is the first building to be constructed on the Arts Grounds since the drama department building opened in 1974.

Global Health Symposium Planned
U.Va.’s Center for Global Health will host its 2008 symposium on Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Rotunda Dome Room. This year's event will feature a poster session, networking opportunities and a keynote address by the director of NIH's Fogarty International Center, Roger Glass, M.D. The symposium will provide information about global health in the 21st century.

Seventeenth Annual Fourth-Year 5K Scheduled for November
Hundreds of U.Va. students are expected at Newcomb Hall’s Plaza on Saturday, Nov. 22, for the 17th annual Fourth-Year 5K Run/Walk. The race begins at 8 a.m. and winds along several streets adjacent to the University including Lewis Mountain Road and Thomson Road.
