Main Heating Plant Environmental Upgrade

All major components of the environmental and performance upgrade at the University’s  main heating plant, located adjacent to the hospital between Jefferson Park Avenue and West Main Street, have been completed.  Two existing coal/gas boilers were fitted with new pollution-control equipment and three boilers were replaced.  There are now five modern boilers.  All five are able to burn gas; three of the five will also burn coal, and two of the five will also burn oil.  A second rail spur was added to the existing train shed to allow for increased deliveries of coal.  The upgrade also included the addition of an ash silo.

The heating plant was upgraded and expanded to meet the increased demand for steam generation and to replace aging equipment.
