Construction/Renovation/Utility Project Updates
Bavaro Hall
Construction of Bavaro Hall, located between Ruffner Hall and Emmet Street, is 40 percent complete. The masonry chimneys are nearing completion; installation of roof trusses is under way and exterior masonry wall construction continues. The new 65,000 square-foot building will provide additional academic, research and clinical program space for U.Va.’s Curry School of Education. Completion is expected in August 2010. Carter-Harrison Research Building
Construction of the underground portion of the building is nearly complete. Installation of the landscaping and site work is also nearing completion, which will allow the walkway between MR-4 and MR-6 to be opened to pedestrians by July. Central Grounds Water Distribution System
All tunnel openings have been created; piping demolition is complete, and approximately 50 percent of the replacement piping is in place. Extensive structural tunnel repair work is ongoing at Thornton and Garrett Halls. Traffic detours along McCormick Road will continue through early August. |
Claude Moore Medical Education Building
Construction of the Medical Education Building, located at the corner of Lane Road and Lancaster Way, is 50 percent complete. Steel erection is complete and masonry wall construction is under way. The new 58,500 square-foot building will consolidate medical education programs currently scattered across Grounds in outdated facilities and create a central entrance to the School of Medicine. Emily Couric Cancer Center
Construction of the Emily Couric Cancer Center, located at the corner of Lee Street and Jefferson Park Avenue, continues. The center will house all outpatient services for adults diagnosed with cancer. The center is expected to open in spring 2011. Hospital Bed Expansion
A Hospital Bed Expansion Project will add 72 private patient rooms and support areas to the front of University Hospital on Lee Street. The front entry to the hospital is closed for the duration of the project. Vehicular drop-off is located on the south side of Lee Street west of the former front entry. Pedestrian access is being maintained to the east and west of the former front entry. Steel erection is occurring from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., weather permitting. Occupancy is expected in late 2011. Monroe Hall
Renovation of Monroe Hall is nearing completion. The renovation includes the replacement of flooring, windows and HVAC systems. When complete, the building will have 10 classrooms and more than 70 offices for use by the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Occupancy is scheduled for July 1. |
Pavilion X
Restoration of the exterior of Pavilion X has begun. This historic preservation project is focused on returning the exterior of Pavilion X to its circa 1825 appearance. Highlights of the project include restoring the roofs over the student rooms to their original flat-roof system and replicating the nine-foot-tall parapet wall on the roof. Printing and Copying Services Building

South Lawn

West Main Street
Utility lines on the south side of West Main Street are being undergrounded as part of the city's continuing effort to improve West Main Street. The project, which is being executed by the University of Virginia Foundation as part of the construction around U.Va.’s Medical Center, also includes motorist and pedestrian safety improvements to West Main Street and its intersection with Jefferson Park Avenue. Traffic along West Main Street is currently reduced to one lane and the work is expected to continue through December. Whitehead Road Projects
Work continues on two U.Va. facilities, a College of Arts & Sciences Research Building and an Information Technology Engineering Building, being constructed along the north side of Whitehead Road. Excavation is complete at both sites. Installation of tower cranes for each site will continue through the end of July.
