Landscaping, Sidewalk and Utility Project Updates
Main Heating Plant Environmental Upgrade
A major environmental and performance upgrade project continues at the University's main heating plant, located adjacent to the hospital between Jefferson Park Avenue and West Main Street. Two existing coal/gas boilers are being fitted with new pollution-control equipment and three boilers are being replaced. At the end of the process, there will be five modern boilers. All five will be able to burn gas. Three of the five will also be able to burn coal, and two will be able to burn oil. A second rail spur will be added to the existing train shed to allow for increased deliveries of coal, and a new coal silo will be added. The upgrade also includes the addition of an ash silo which is currently about 90 percent complete.
The heating plant is being upgraded and expanded to meet the increased demand for steam generation and to replace aging equipment. The project is expected to be completed by September 2009. |

South Chiller Plant Expansion
In preparation for growth in the Health System area, an expansion of the South Chiller Plant, located behind Medical Research Building 4 on Crispell Drive, is under construction.
The plant will provide up to 6,000 tons of additional chilled water to the Medical Center for air conditioning and equipment cooling in new projects such as the Clinical Cancer Center, the Carter Harrison Medical Education building, hospital bed expansion projects and future hospital expansion. Additionally, expanding the South Chiller Plant allows for a regional approach to providing the utilities required by U.Va. facilities. Construction is expected to be completed in the fall.
Of Note to Neighbors:
Crispell Drive will maintain two-way traffic along the section of roadway until further notice. Pedestrian access from the East Parking Garage will remain unchanged; however, patrons will need to access the MR-4 building from Lane Road. Flagmen will remain on site during any construction activity near Crispell Drive.
Site work will occur from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Weekend site work will be conducted as required from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Roofing activities are expected to continue until mid June. |
