Outreach to Non-Profit Organizations

U.Va.’s Community Relations Office is dedicated to helping our community. We work daily to build on-going relationships with area nonprofit organizations to learn about their needs and to see how the University can provide assistance in meeting those needs.

The office engages in three major outreach efforts to help nonprofit organizations in the community:

Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign

The Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign gives state employees an easy way to contribute to charities of their choice. This year employees can choose from more than 1,400 charities, many of which serve area communities. The types of charities participating in the campaign are involved in animal welfare, environmental and/or historical restoration, preservation or conservation, health and human services and medical research.

For more than 10 years, U.Va. has consistently been one of the top givers in the state. In 2006, U.Va. employees donated a record $813,125 to worthy causes through the campaign. Read more. U.Va.'s CVC Web site

United Way Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring

The Community Relations Office coordinates the University’s participation in the community-wide annual volunteer service day called the United Way Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring. U.Va. employees engage in scores of volunteer projects ranging from landscaping and painting to reading to children and visiting with elderly residents. On September 19, 2007, 1,200 U.Va. employees volunteered in the Day of Caring. U.Va. participants completed more than 100 projects at area nonprofits and schools.

U.Va. Connects Program

Through its U.Va. Connects Program, the Community Relations Office seeks to provide volunteer support, equipment and/or expertise to area nonprofit organizations. For example, U.Va. has loaned computer hardware and software to the Senior Center’s Computer Lab and provided faculty, staff and student volunteers to help Computers4Kids and the Senior Center’s Computer Lab.
