The 2007 Sofa Shuffle
On Saturday, May 19, 2007, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., truckloads of donated furniture were given away to community members, free of charge.
U.Va.’s Offices of Community Relations and Off-Grounds Housing hosted the first ever Sofa Shuffle to encourage departing U.Va. students to donate their unwanted furniture in support of Charlottesville area nonprofit organizations and residents. More than 200 community members claimed items on Saturday. Donated items included sofas, chairs, tables, lamps and clothes. Canned food was also collected in support of the emergency food bank.
Longer-term neighborhood residents have expressed concern about the amount of usable furniture and other household goods departing students discard in dumpsters or leave on the curbside. The Sofa Shuffle works to address this issue by making it easier for students to donate items.
Partners in the 2007 Sofa Shuffle included the City of Charlottesville, 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, The Salvation Army, Management Services Corporation and Woodard Properties.
Planning for the 2008 Sofa Shuffle has already begun.
