South Lawn Project Update: May 2007

Barton Malow, the firm managing the South Lawn project, continues construction of a temporary bus stop and handicapped access ramp behind New Cabell Hall, along Jefferson Park Avenue. This month, workers will erect on-Grounds construction fencing south of New Cabell Hall.

Starting this week, the construction site east of the current B-1 parking lot will see increasing activity. Fencing around the site will begin early this summer. To prepare for the fencing and installation of storm pipes, workers will soon trim trees along the property line between South Lawn and Oakhurst Circle. The work, which will include trimming only branches hanging over the property line, is necessary to promote safety by eliminating the possibility of falling branches.

In anticipation of the current B-1 parking lot being closed this summer for South Lawn construction, work also begins this week on a parking lot adjacent to Bice House at 583 Brandon Avenue. The Bice lot will be expanded by 36 parking spaces.

While great care has been taken in the South Lawn design to preserve as many trees as possible, approximately 12 small trees adjacent to the existing Bice lot will be removed to allow for the expansion. Workers will install fencing around the Bice lot to prevent soil erosion, and grading at the site will begin soon.

Close to completion of the South Lawn project, a variety of plantings will be installed, particularly along Valley Road. The plantings will occur as construction activity ends to allow for proper protection of the new trees.
