West Main Street Sidewalk Closure
As part of the ongoing West Main Street streetscape project, the sidewalk on the south side of West Main Street between Jefferson Park Avenue and the metered parking spaces in front of Clark Park will be closed beginning Monday, July 20, for approximately two weeks.
Detour signs will direct pedestrians to cross to the sidewalk on the north side of West Main Street at 14th Street NW and at the crosswalk in front of University Baptist Church. The dedicated right-turn lane from eastbound West Main Street onto Jefferson Park Avenue will also be closed, though vehicles can still make a right turn onto Jefferson Park Avenue from eastbound West Main Street. Flagmen will direct traffic during construction.

Sidewalk Work to Temporarily Alter Pedestrian, Traffic Patterns
Work begun on Saturday, June 27, to replace the temporary asphalt sidewalk along the south side of Jefferson Park Avenue near the South Lawn construction project with a permanent concrete sidewalk, curb and gutter. The project is scheduled to be complete by Aug. 21.
Pedestrians will be re-routed from the current temporary asphalt sidewalk to a new temporary sidewalk on the south side of Jefferson Park Avenue. The new walkway will be shielded by concrete barriers and chain link fencing.
There will be a minor change in traffic lanes on Jefferson Park Avenue to accommodate the walkway; the left turn lane to Ruppel Drive will be temporarily eliminated.
McCormick Road Traffic Advisory
Work has commenced on the replacement of a portion of the Medium Temperature Hot Water Distribution System used for campus-wide heating. The upgrade is necessary to accommodate increased loads from ongoing construction projects – Bavaro Hall and the two science buildings on Whitehead Road. The vast majority of the work will take place within the tunnels between Garrett Hall and Thornton Hall along McCormick Road. However, tunnel openings will be created at critical points along the system to remove and replace piping. Portions of the excavations required for these openings will extend into McCormick Road. These excavations will require traffic to be restricted to one lane for a portion of McCormick Road for most of the summer. Traffic now flows eastbound from the bridge crossing at Emmett Street to University Avenue. Traffic traveling to the west from University Avenue will follow detour signs.
West Main Street Traffic Advisory
Motorists on West Main Street near its intersection with Jefferson Park Avenue will likely experience delays starting Monday, continuing through December, as utility lines on the south side of West Main Street are moved underground as part of the city's continuing effort to improve West Main Street. The project, which is being executed by the University of Virginia Foundation as part of the construction around the Medical Center, also includes motorist and pedestrian safety improvements to West Main Street and its intersection with Jefferson Park Avenue.
The first phase of this work will be restricted to the south side of West Main Street, adjacent to the surface parking lot in front of the 11th Street parking garage, extending across Jefferson Park Avenue to Clark Park.
During the work, traffic along West Main Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction. The single west-bound traffic lane will also serve for left-hand turns onto Jefferson Park Avenue. Construction barriers, signs and flag persons will be in place to alert motorists at all times work is underway.
Project work will adjust to major events such as Reunions Weekend, student move-in, football games and major concerts. This may include changing working hours, working days and type of work scheduled for a given day. Pedestrian access around the work site will be provided throughout the project.
Further traffic advisories will be provided as the project advances.
