The Center for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Virginia serves as a resource for research and scholarship in the field of Russian and East European Studies. The center suppports teaching, research, curriculum development, community outreach programs and university-wide activities. In these efforts the Center cooperates with other educational institutions in Virginia and the Southeast.

In cooperation with the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), the Center brings to the University distinguished visiting scholars both from this country and Eastern Europe each year. The Center belongs to a number of organizations which provide opportunities for study and research abroad: The International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) offers research grants to graduate students and faculty; The American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR) provides opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to take advanced courses in Russian at the Pushkin Institute, Moscow; The Council for International Educational Exchange (CIEE) coordinates year-long, semester and summer programs in Russia and St. Petersburg State University for undergraduates and graduates.
