“The Caucasus: Crossroads of Geopolitical Interests”  
 

A lecture by Sergei Markedonov of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Washington, D.C.

Dr. Markedonov is an expert on the Caucasus, regional security, and interethnic conflict. His publications include several books and 50 articles. After earning his Ph.D. at Rostov-on-Don State Pedagogical University, he worked as Deputy Director of the Institute for Political and Military Analysis in Moscow. He has held teaching positions at Moscow State University and the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Dr. Markedonov will speak about the Caucasus as a zone of conflict and cooperation among the U.S., Russia, the EU, Turkey and Iran.

Why did the USSR collapse in 1991? What role did domestic and international factors play in the collapse? What have been the consequences of the collapse for the international community, the Soviet successor states, and the peoples of the former Soviet Union? These and other questions will be the focus of this roundtable featuring four members of the UVa faculty. Co-sponsored by the Miller Center.
