Call for Papers
The Virginia Social Science Association (VSSA) welcomes paper proposals from faculty members, graduate students and undergraduates for the Annual Conference, which, for the second consecutive year, will be held at Old Dominion University, March 24, 2012. To be considered for inclusion in the program, please submit the paper proposal by 5 p.m. on January 27, 2012.
The proposal should include the following information: name, paper title, e-mail address, phone number, school name, academic status (undergraduate, graduate, faculty member), and if appropriate, the faculty advisor’s name and contact information. The proposal should be one page in length and should summarize the theoretical argument, methodology, findings, and significance of the project.
Paper proposals should be sent via e-mail to C. Nana Derby at VSSA@vsu.edu.
Notification of acceptance: All scholars submitting a proposal will be notified by February 3, 2012 if their paper has been accepted for the program. Please contact C. Nana Derby with any questions about the proposal process or conference program.
Student paper awards
Faculty members are urged to encourage their graduate and undergraduate students to submit scholarly papers for the “Best Paper” Competitions. Papers will only be considered if the paper proposal is accepted for the program. The deadline for submitting the full paper for the competition is 5 p.m. on February 17, 2012. The winners will receive their awards at the conference lunch.

The requirements for consideration of full papers for student paper awards are:
(1) Maximum length (text and notes): 25 standard double-spaced pages.
(2) Submissions for a prize must be endorsed by a faculty member in writing (via an email message).
(3) Student submissions must be accompanied by a cover page that supplies all the following information: Name of author, title of paper; college/university, graduate or undergraduate, year in school, major, phone, email, mailing address; name and contact information of the faculty member endorsing the paper.
(4) Submission must be received as an electronic file by 5 p.m. on February 17, 2012.

Students in all majors are encouraged to apply to represent the University of Virginia at the annual Atlantic Coast Conference undergraduate research conference. To be considered, submit your resume (including name of one faculty reference) and a 250-word abstract of your research or creative work to the Center for Undergraduate Excellence, undergraduate-excellence@virginia.edu, by noon, February 7. Your email should include your name, telephone number, year, and preference for presentation format (oral, poster, performance, display). Applicants will present their work for consideration on February 13.

The fourth annual Undergraduate Research Conference of the University of Virginia will be held April 20, 2012. Participation is not limited to U.S. colleges and university students. International students are also welcome. Proposals or abstracts for oral or poster presentations may be submitted starting January 10, 2012, and continuing until February 25. A selection committee will review the proposal or abstracts and will notify those that are accepted for presentation. Students who are not presenting, parents, and faculty are encouraged to attend. There is no cost for registration but you must register by April 8, 2011. Given that space is limited, early registration is advised.

The theme of the 2012 Pan-University Research Poster Competition is Impact. Undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral researchers are invited to participate. Applicants are required to follow a poster template available on the above web site and will be notified by April 20 whether their submission is accepted. Winners will receive $500 in travel funds. The deadline for submission is March 12, 2012.
