British Summer Study Scholarships

pleased to offer fellowships to rising 4th years for summer study in the United Kingdom at The Globe, Oxford University, and Edinburgh University. In addition to course work, the fellows will have the opportunity to participate in field trips and social activities arranged by the educational institutions.
The courses offered are three weeks in duration. The award recipient chooses the British University and the intended course of study (applicants must state their preference for location in their application).
Eligibility
Current 3rd year students (18-22 years old by June 1)
Virginia resident/U.S. citizen
Literary & scholastic ability/attainments
Quality of character
Ability to lead
Physical vigor, as shown by interest in sports or other activities
Term
3 weeks in July/August
Support
Each English-Speaking Union Branch determines the amount of funds awarded for the fellowship. The award provides tuition, travel stipend, most meals, and dorm room with shared bath.
Application Process
The applications are available in hard copy at the Center for Undergraduate Excellence in Rm. 305 of the Harrison Institute.
Application also includes:
1. A double-spaced statement, of 300 or less words, telling why the applicant would like to study in the British Isles this summer. The applicant should give some indication of reading and background in relevant subjects.
2. Official transcript
3. Two photographs between 2-2.5 inches wide x 2-3 inches high, taken within past 6 months. Applicant's name and the University of Virginia should be on the back of each photo.
4. Three letters of recommendation
a. One attesting to applicant's character, scholarship, achievements, leadership, talents, etc. from an academic advisor (or professor)
b. One attesting to the applicant's qualifications from a faculty member
c. One from a business or professional person (can be volunteer/extracurricular activity too) attesting to the applicant's character, seriousness of purpose
