[Message from President Sullivan about how you can help relief efforts for those affected by the typhoon in the Philippines]
Dear Members of the University Community:
All of us are distressed and saddened by the death toll and widespread damage in the Philippines after last weekend’s catastrophic Typhoon Haiyan.
UVa’s student-run Organization of Young Filipino Americans (OYFA) is planning several events this week to recognize the victims and to appeal for assistance. On Wednesday, OYFA urges University community members to wear a Filipino or OYFA shirt, or a red shirt, in honor of the victims. On Thursday, OYFA is holding a symposium featuring the Filipino-American comedian Rex Navarrete at 7:00 p.m., in Newcomb Hall Theater; this event will include a presentation about the typhoon disaster. On Friday, OYFA will hold a candlelight vigil on the steps of the Rotunda in remembrance of the victims.
More information can be found on the OYFA website (www.oyfaatuva.com) and the OYFA Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/events/358284054315348/). In addition, CNN has compiled information at http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/09/world/iyw-how-to-help-typhoon-haiyan/index.html.
I am grateful to OYFA and to all of our students, faculty, and staff who are taking action to help mitigate the effects of this disaster. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of the Philippines.
Teresa A. Sullivan
